Wasp activity usually begins to increase around March and April, when queen wasps emerge from hibernation and start building new nests. At this early stage, the nest is small, but it can grow quickly as the colony develops and worker wasps begin foraging in the surrounding area.
Wasp nests are made from chewed wood mixed with saliva, creating a paper-like structure. Roof spaces, lofts, rafters, soffits, gutter areas, sheds and wall cavities are common nesting locations because they offer warmth, shelter and protection from the weather. Properties with insulated roof voids and easy access to gardens, bins, flowers and food sources can be particularly attractive to wasps.
At the start of the season, many customers contact us because they are unsure whether they have bees or wasps. While bees are often noticed earlier in spring, wasp problems usually become more common from May onwards, when colonies grow and wasp activity becomes more obvious around residential and commercial properties.
